Earth materials
Earth Materials encompass the minerals, rocks, soil and water that constitute our planet and the physical, chemical and biological processes that produce them. Since the expansion of computer technology in the last two decades of the 20th century, many universities have compressed or eliminated individual course offerings such as mineralogy, optical mineralogy, igneous petrology, sedimentology and metamorphic petrology and replaced them with Earth materials courses. Earth materials courses have become an essential curricular component in the fields of geology, geoscience, Earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology and many related areas of study. This textbook is designed to address the needs of a one or two semester Earth materials course.
Decolonizing environmental education for different contexts and nations
As Dominant Western Worldviews (DWWs) proliferate through ongoing structures of globalization, neoliberalism, extractive capitalism, and colonialism, they inevitably marginalize those deemed as 'Other' (Indigenous, Black, Minority Ethnic, non-Western communities and non-human 'Others', including animals, plants, technologies, and energies). Environmental Education (EE) is well-positioned to trouble and minimize the harmful human impacts on social and ecological systems, yet the field is susceptible to how DWWs constrain and discipline what counts as viable knowledge, with a consequence of this being the loss of situated knowledges.
The field description of metamorphic rocks
Metamorphic rocks form a substantial proportion of the material that makes up the Earth's crust, and metamorphic processes have been almost continually occurring throughout geological time since the origin of that crust. Metamorphism can be defined simply as the process by which sedimentary or igneous rocks are transformed (metamorphosed) by re-crystallisation due to changes in pressure, temperature, or fluid conditions. To complicate matters somewhat, metamorphism can of course also act on rocks that have already been metamorphosed previously, building layer upon layer of complexity into those rocks that record field evidence of some of Earth's most dynamic processes.
